How has Rajma along with rice gained so much popularity in India?

One of the most popular dishes that is originated in the Indian subcontinent and is purely vegetarian is the ‘Rajma’ also called ‘Razma’. This dish basically consists of red kidney beans which are made in thick gravy along with the most popular spices of India. Indian food remains incomplete if there is no spice used in them. This dish is preferred to be served along with rice, especially Basmati rice. The best quality Rajmas are said to be found in two places in India. One is the hills of Nepal which is a part of Himachal Pradesh and second is in the region of Jammu lying in Jammu and Kashmir. It is true that the red kidney beans were not originated in India but was brought to India from Mexico.

These facts are based on only 100 gram of rajma when served-
  • Amount of calories is about 140 calories per 100 gram of red kidney beans.
  • Amount of protein is equal to 5.7 grams.
  • Amount of fats is equal to 5.9 grams.
  • Amount of carbohydrates content is around 18 grams.
The various ingredients involved in the Recipe to prepare Rajma are mentioned below-
  • The amount of Rajmas could be 1.25 cups.
  • The amount of water could be around 4.5 cups.
  • 2 bay leaves.
  • 3 black cardamom.
  • 2 tablespoon of oil.
  • 2 finely chopped onions.
  • 2 to 3 cardamom pods.
  • 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks.
  • Puree of 4 tomatoes.
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder.
  • ¼ teaspoon red chilli powder.
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder.
  • 1.5 tablespoon of garlic ginger paste.
  • 2 tablespoon rajma masala powder (these are available in the market)
  • Salt (according to taste)
In the Northern states of India Rajma Masala is quite popular dish especially, Punjab. The Punjabi’s way of cooking is quite different and very easy. Their rajma recipe would be completed if the following steps are followed properly.
  • Firstly, the red kidney beans are soaked in water overnight
  • Next day it is boiled in the pressure cooker
  • Mixed with the great popular bhuna masala of India
  • The bhuna masala consists of chopped onions, puree of tomatoes, ginger and garlic paste and combinations of fresh, natural spices like- cumin, chilli powder, turmeric powder and coriander
The Punjabi get together feels incomplete without the serving of Rajma Masala in front of the guests and friends with a mouthwatering rajma recipe. The Rajma Masala is topped with pure makhan (home-made butter). The entire dish could be garnished with coriander leaves and slices of onion. Along with the Rice and Rajma, if someone like cold Chaas also known as buttermilk could also be served. Serve hot and enjoy!
